Matilda composer Tim Minchin is the proud recipient of a 2013 Broadway.com Audience Award for Favorite New Song! Three tunes from the hit musical made the top five on this year’s ballot, and the winner is the sweet and rousing anthem "When I Grow Up." We caught up with the Tony-nominated comedian and songwriter after he accepted the award and jumped off the stage.
"Well that was fun! This feels good. 'When I Grow Up' isn’t a complicated song—some stuff in Matilda is quite complicated and dense—but it’s a thematic song and it seems to grab people of all ages for different reasons. I’m proud of it."
So what did Minchin think of his stiff Kinky Boots competition? "I’m up against Cyndi Lauper in this Favorite New Song category, and she’s one of the greatest songwriters of my lifetime. Celebrating is great and awards are great, but judging art and pitting Matilda against Kinky Boots is just weird. They’re totally different genres, they’re not even the same game."
Minchin acknowledged that having fans choose what their new favorite song is feels extra special. "Having people who are just fans of musicals and who love Broadway and who love theater saying, 'I feel passionate about this and I feel passionate that,' takes away some of the scariness of it and makes it just about the people who you’re actually making the piece for. And we made Matilda absolutely to tell a story that would appeal to children of all ages—from six to 96."
